Waar Teus in het verleden voor een nieuw album project vaak zijn complete bezetting omgooide, op zoek naar een nieuw geluid, heeft hij met zijn succesvolle Liberty Group inmiddels een tweede album opgenomen (na Journey Of Man in 2019). Een live-album dit keer, opgenomen tijdens 4 concerten in jazzclub Paradox (Tilburg). ‘Een van de fijnste belevingen die een liefhebber van live jazz zich kan wensen’ repte een 5-sterren recensie van De Volkskrant al eens over deze formatie. De groep haalt het beste in Teus naar boven; de complete vrijheid en ruimte om tijdens een compositie in een ‘split second’ op zijn kop te zetten. Het album Pleasure Is The Measure (2021) voegt daad bij woord en legt de focus volledig op vrijheid en spelplezier.

Na het succes van het album Saudade (2019), met onder meer een Edison Award Jazz Nationaal, besloten Wedgeview Music en Teus Nobel de krachten nogmaals te bundelen, met het album Tanto Amor (2021). Waar op Saudade het erfgoed van de Braziliaanse meestercomponist Antônio Carlos Jobim werd geëerd, werd nu (ter ere van zijn 75e verjaardag) het repertoire van Jobim’s natuurlijke opvolger Ivan Lins vakkundig onder handen genomen. De connectie van Lins met Wedgeview is al jaren sterk; Lins opende in 2010 zelfs de Wedgeview-studio in Woerdense Verlaat, tijdens de opnames voor het album Intimate (2011). Met dit keer een pianoloze bezetting (maar mèt de kenmerkende grote strijkerssectie) plus gastfeatures van gitaarlegende Leonardo Amuedo en vocaliste Anna Serierse is Tanto Amor een nieuw hoofdstuk in de muzikale ontdekkingsreis van Teus Nobel.

After the success of their album Saudade (2019), with a.o. an Edison Jazz Award, Wedgeview Music and Teus Nobel decided to join forces again, with the album Tanto Amor (2021). After honoring master composer Antônio Carlos Jobim on Saudade, Tanto Amor celebrates the 75th birthday of Jobim’s natural successor Ivan Lins. The connection between Lins and Wedgeview has always been strong; Lins even opened the studiolocation at Woerdense Verlaat in 2010, during the recordings of the album Intimate (2011). The piano was left out of this line-up, which of course does include the signature sound of a big string section, plús guitar legend Leonardo Amuedo and vocalist Anna Serierse. A new chapter in Teus’ musical journey.

Al vele jaren stond een album met een grote strijkerssectie hoog op de bucketlist van Teus Nobel. Een jarenlange en vruchtbare samenwerking met Roeland Jacobs van Wedgeview Studios lag ten grondslag aan dit nieuwe album. Teus nam zijn albums Flow (2012), Legacy (2014) en Social Music (2019) op in deze studio en werkte op dezelfde locatie mee aan tal van cd-opnames. Voor de samenwerking koos het duo voor de muziek van Antonio Carlos Jobim, voor wie beide heren een zwak hebben. Met arrangementen waarin de herinnering aan Klaus Ogermann doorklinkt en een grote groep strijkers afkomstig van het Radio Filharmonisch Orkest namen zij het album “Saudade” op, welke zij opdroegen aan hun beiden vaders die kort na elkaar overleden in de zomer van 2019. Er is voor gekozen om onbekender repertoire van Jobim onder de aandacht te brengen, alhoewel een bewerking van The Girl From Ipanema natuurlijk niet mocht ontbreken. Voor dit album ontving Teus in 2020 een Edison Award Jazz Nationaal.

For many years, an album with a big string section topped the bucket list of trumpeter Teus Nobel. After an extensive cooperation in the previous decade, he decided to join forces with pianist/arranger Roeland Jacobs of Wedgeview Studios; a location where Teus had already recorded his albums Flow (2012), Legacy (2014) and Journey Of Man (2019). For their project, Nobel and Jacobs chose the repertoire of brazilian master composer Antonio Carlos Jobim as the ideal music for blossoming both their signatures. With arrangements (by Jacobs) that breath the legacy of arranger Klaus Ogermann (1930-2016) and string players of the dutch Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the album SAUDADE was recorded. The album is a musical salute to both their fathers, who passed away within two weeks from each other in the summer of 2019. For Saudade, they chose to highlight some of Jobim’s lesser known (but even more beautiful) repertoire, although classic The Girl From Ipanema could not by passed.

Als voorbereiding op dit nieuwe album besloot Teus, 10 jaar na het voltooien van zijn jazz bachelor, alsnog een masterstudie te volgen met als doel het intellectueel erfgoed van jazz innovator Woody Shaw binnenstebuiten te keren. Direct daarna dook hij de studio in met zijn nieuwe Liberty Group. Het open, modale karakter van veel van de composities op Journey Of Man geven zijn Liberty Group alle vrijheid om tot de meeste pure vorm van geïmproviseerde muziek te komen: dat gebied waar elke seconde muzikale beslissingen genomen kunnen worden die composities compleet op zijn kop zetten.

“Journey Of Man” is Teus Nobel’s fourth jazz album in succession, after predecessors “Flow” (2012), “Legacy” (2014) and “Social Music” (2016). In preparation of recording this new album, Teus decided to apply for a masters degree, 10 years after completing his bachelor phase. It was his goal to enrich his musical pallet by turning the intellectual legacy of jazz innovator Woody Shaw inside-out. Immediately after completely the course, he entered the studio with his new Liberty Group. The open, modal character of the compositions on “Journey Of Man” gives them the freedom to come to the purest form of improvised music: that area where musical decisions can be made in a split second, turning the composition upside-down completely.

Nadat de Vlaamse componist en pianovirtuoos Jef Neve Teus Nobel inschakelde voor het opnemen van de soundtrack voor de Vlaamse film “Sprakeloos” verscheen Teus ook op Jef’s album “Spirit Control”. Hiermee tourde door Nederland, Belgie en Frankrijk en werden concerten gegeven in o.a. Bimhuis (Amsterdam), Paradiso (Amsterdam), Tivoli (Utrecht) en de Gentse Opera. Een overduidelijke muzikale click zorgt er voor dat de twee musici in 2019 ook veelvuldig in duo-setting te horen zullen zijn. In 2018 kwam bovendien de documentaire “Zie Mij Doen” (Klara van Es) in Nederlandse en Vlaamse bioscopen, waarvoor Jef Neve de muziek verzorgde met ook een voorname rol voor Teus. De documentaire werd o.a. bekroond met “Beste Belgische Documentaire” op het Docville Filmfestival.

After joining Jef Neve’s recordings for the Flemish movie “Sprakeloos” (“Speechless”), Teus Nobel also appeared on Jef’s new album “Spirit Control”. An extended tour in Belgium, The Netherlands and France followed, including Bimhuis (Amsterdam), Paradiso (Amsterdam), Tivoli (Utrecht) and the Gent Operahouse. The clear musical chemistry between Jef and Teus established a range of duo concerts in 2019. In addition, in 2018 a documentary called “Zie Mij Doen” (“See Me Do”) by Klara van Es entered Dutch and Belgian cinemas; Jef wrote the music for this documentary, again inviting Teus to make his appearance. The movie was awarded several prizes, like the “Best Belgian Documentary” during the Docville Filmfestival.
